Strategic Flexibility

The new Medical Education and Research Building for UCSF in Fresno, California serves as the hub of medical education and research for the entire Central Valley. The building consolidates a diverse range of programs for fourteen major departments, and features a hi-tech, multi-media auditorium, advanced A/V-supported conference rooms with full teleconferencing services, a digital medical research library, clinical skill laboratories with digital recording capabilities, indoor/outdoor dining areas and terraces, and an outdoor amphitheater.

The building design solution offers a state-of-the-art facility, which allows flexibility for future changes of program and technological advancements, while also fitting into the surrounding medical campus context.  The building is oriented on a north-south axis, responding to the curvature of an adjacent thoroughfare, and the curved form also defines the exterior amphitheater to be used by the building occupants and medical campus community. The building incorporates many “green” building design principles and energy management strategies to mitigate Fresno’s climatic concerns, including exterior sun-control devices which control solar gain and provide a visual relief to the façade.
